I’m reading a book called Londonstani, about Pakistani youth trying to make their way in the slums of London. They love American rap culture and worship designer jeans and watches, and they jack cell phones for a living. It’s a great read, although the dialog is a little difficult to read at times, heavy British rapster street slang overlapped with Urdu phrases. Plus it’s written in the style of cell phone texts, with 4’s and 2’s and abbreviations. Can’t say why it interests me but it does. I’m always interested what makes young people tick, and exploring subculture.
